Michigan-based circular supply chain turns end-of-life aluminum into safety-critical vehicle structure.

GRAND HAVEN, MI AND CASSOPOLIS, MI, August 5, 2026 — Shape Corp., a global Tier 1 supplier of lightweight structural systems, and Hydro have brought aluminum made with 75% post-consumer recycled scrap into production in a structural front bumper beam for General Motors’ Cadillac OPTIQ. The project demonstrates how aluminum recovered from end-of-life products can be engineered into safety-critical vehicle structures at production scale — an important step forward for circular material use in the automotive industry.

The front bumper beam is a crash-management component located behind the visible bumper cover that absorbs and distributes impact energy in a collision, helping protect passengers, pedestrians, and critical vehicle systems. Successfully using post-consumer recycled aluminum in this type of safety-critical structure demonstrates that end-of-life material can be engineered to meet demanding automotive performance requirements.
Hydro CIRCAL is produced using aluminum recovered from end-of-life products such as vehicles, buildings, and electrical cables. The material is independently verified on a batch-by-batch basis by DNV, a global assurance and risk-management organization, to contain at least 75% post-consumer scrap, providing traceability and documentation to support customer sustainability and material transparency reporting. Hydro CIRCAL is estimated to deliver a 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared with the North American average for aluminum, based on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
A Michigan-based circular supply chain supports this effort. Aluminum scrap collected in North America is recycled by Hydro in Cassopolis, Michigan, and then formed into components that Shape engineers and then assembles into the front bumper system for the Cadillac OPTIQ platform.

This project marks the first time Shape has brought Hydro CIRCAL into series production for a safety-critical structural automotive application and reflects the company’s continued investment in advanced aluminum extrusion, forming, and joining technologies used to produce lightweight structural systems for vehicles.
